We hope that this experiment will improve the discoverability of critical privacy and security information and controls provided in Page Info, such as site permissions. To try and reduce this confusion, Chrome will run an experiment in M93 that replaces the lock in the address bar with a more neutral entry point to Page Info (example below). In a recent study, we found that only 11% of participants could correctly identify the meaning of the lock icon. In particular, our research indicates that users often associate this icon with a site being trustworthy, when in fact it's only the connection that's secure. The company stated that it is exploring the possibility of replacing the lock icon with a down arrow in Chrome:Īs we approach an HTTPS-first future, we're also re-examining the lock icon that browsers typically show when a site loads over HTTPS. However, as noted by Google back in July, many users misunderstand this representation and think that the icon indicates that you're connected to a trustworthy website even though that may not necessarily be the case. Take a hint from the color options you get for the cursor and see if any of those work for you.Many web browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge use a lock icon in the address bar to indicate that you're connected to the website via a secure HTTPS connection. If the color is still not easy to read, try setting it to brighter colors. The 130 130 130 RGB value changes it to a grey which can be read easily enough on both black and white. You can set a different color for the WindowText value but make sure it is easy to read on both black and white backgrounds. There are likely other places where the color change will be reflected but these three were the ones I discovered right away. The list of apps and processes in the Task Manager also appear in this same color. If you go to the Save As dialog box in any desktop app, the file names will appear in grey. The Security warning box, for example, now shows grey text. The change in the text color doesn’t just effect the color of the text in the File Explorer location bar but also several other dialog boxes on Windows 10. All you need is its RGB value however, read the side effects of this fix below before you select a color.
You can set any other value for the color.
On the black background, it is much easier to read. The text in the File Explorer location bar will now be grey.
Its value is likely set to 0 0 0 which translates to black in RGB. Under the Colors key, look for a value named WindowText.
In the Registry editor, navigate to the following location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors Open the run box with the Win+R keyboard shortcut and type ‘regedit’ in it. Fix black text in File Explorer location bar
